About our Featured Guest Speaker:
DAVID JOLLY grew up in Florida, the son of a pastor. Today, David and his wife Laura are raising their young family in Pinellas County where he served in Congress from 2014-2017. In Congress, David focused on helping veterans and seniors, supporting law enforcement, protecting the environment, and bringing resources back to Florida. David’s work to clean up government corruption was featured on 60 Minutes.

David became nationally known for his independent streak, leading The Tampa Bay Times to write, “It’s refreshing to hear someone take on the system.” One Washington Post columnist famously penned, “Jolly speaks the truth.” And upon leaving Congress, another columnist wrote, “Farewell to the one Congressman willing to compromise.”

David has spent the last eight years as a political analyst on MSNBC. His work has been featured in Time, USA Today, Roll Call, The Washington Post, The New York Times, CNN, NBC, and The Tampa Bay Times. David received a Bachelor’s degree from Emory University and a Juris Doctor Cum Laude from George Mason. David is now a candidate for Florida Governor.

MICHAEL PUTNEY joined WPLG Local 10 in 1989 as senior political reporter and host of This Week in South Florida, becoming one of the region’s most trusted voices on politics and government. He also wrote a semimonthly political column for The Miami Herald.

Born in New York City, Putney grew up in St. Louis and Berkeley, California. After Berkeley High, he attended Deep Springs College, then earned a B.A. in English literature from the University of Missouri, where he also began his journalism career in radio and print.

In 1970, he moved to Washington, D.C., joining The National Observer as a reporter and later West Coast bureau chief. After the paper closed in 1977, he worked for Time Inc. in New York before moving to Florida to write for The Miami Herald’s Sunday magazine, Tropic, and later as a columnist.

Putney returned to broadcasting in 1981 at WTVJ in Miami, focusing on government and politics. By the late 1980s, he had earned “most valuable reporter” status in South Florida media.

A leading authority on Cuban affairs, he reported from Havana numerous times, covering events such as the Mariel boatlift, immigration talks, Che Guevara’s repatriation, and Pope John Paul II’s visit. His reporting earned him two Emmys and a seat on Florida’s Judicial Management Council.

Putney is known for his incisive interviews and commitment to factual reporting. Outside journalism, he enjoys spending time with his daughter Mia, as well as cooking, reading, tennis, and travel.
