Our Story

Inspired by long-standing economic clubs in cities like New York, Washington, DC, and Chicago, the Economic Club of Miami was born from a simple but powerful question: Why not Miami? While Miami had long been Florida’s largest city, 2020 marked a turning point—the moment Florida emerged as the nation’s most freedom-friendly state and Miami seized the opportunity to lead. Built on a deep entrepreneurial tradition as a city of newcomers—people who uprooted themselves from around the world in pursuit of opportunity—Miami has long embodied the spirit of the American Dream.

As talent, capital, and entrepreneurs arrived from across the United States and around the world, Miami evolved from a world-class destination into a global place to live, build, and invest. With deep strengths in finance, investment, technology, and innovation, the city began its ascent as one of the world’s most dynamic financial and tech centers. What was missing was a central forum to bring this growing community of leaders together.

That forum began to take shape when Founding Chairman Jon Hartley joined with three other founding board members—Jeb Bush, Jr., Jeremy Schwarz, and Lourdes Castillo—to create a platform for thoughtful dialogue, meaningful connection, and collaboration in a rapidly changing city.

The Club gained early momentum and national attention in November 2022 with a landmark event featuring Citadel founder Ken Griffin and Miami Mayor Francis Suarez. Shortly thereafter, Francisco Gonzalez stepped in as Executive Director, helping guide the Club into its next phase of growth—from 35 members in early 2023 to more than 350 active members by the end of 2025.

Today, the Economic Club of Miami has become the premier place for newcomers and long-time leaders alike to convene, connect, and collaborate—bringing together global investors, technology leaders, policymakers, and civic voices who are shaping Miami’s future. As the city continues its ascent as a global financial capital, the Club remains committed to expanding opportunity and ensuring the American Dream remains within reach for all.
